Use of Basic Substances and Potential Basic Substances to Control Potato Pathogens and Postharvest Diseases of Papaya and Sour Cherries

Basic substances are compounds used in human medicine, or as food ingredient or of common use that find additional interest as products for crop protection. In the EU, they are regulated under Reg. 1107/2009. With the increased demand for alternatives to synthetic pesticides, basic substances are seen as molecules that can complement, and with time also replace, some of the chemical plant protection products currently in use. Together with approved basic substances, there is a list of treatments that could be registered as basic substances. In the meeting, after brief introduction of Euphresco BasicS project and Euphresco mission, three presentations on potential basic substances will be made: i) Electrolised water for the management of postharvest decay of fruit and vegetables, ii) Use of salts to control postharvest decay of citrus, and iii) Pre-postharvest application of salts against gray mold of table grapes.

Prof. Dr. Gianfranco Romanazzi got Degree ‘cum laude’ in Agricultural Sciences in 1995 and PhD in Crop Protection in 1999 at the University of Bari. He joined Marche Polytechnic University in Ancona in 2001, where he is professor of Plant pathology and chairs the BSc in Agricultural Science and Technology and MSc in Land and Agricultural Technology programs. He coordinates several projects, including PRIMA StopMedWaste and Euphresco BasicS, and research activity focuses on alternatives to synthetic fungicides for pre and postharvest disease management. Since June 2020, he is President of the Italian Association for Plant Protection (AIPP).

Dr Giovani holds a MSc ‘cum laude’ in Biology (molecular biology) from University of L’Aquila (Italy), a MSc on Management (specialty intellectual property and innovation) from the University of Strasbourg (France) and a PhD in biochemistry and biophysics from the University Pierre et Marie Curie (France). After more than 10 years of research experience in world leading universities, governmental agencies and private companies he moved into the field of research funding and international research cooperation. Since 2014 he coordinates the Euphresco network at the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization.

Institute of Plant Protection - National Research Institute (IPP-NRI), Poznań, Poland

Prof. IPP-NRI dr. hab. Jolanta Kowalska is the head of the Department of Organic Agriculture and Environmental Protection at the Institute of Plant Protection - National Research Institute in Poznań, Poland. She is expert and lecturer in the field of the protection of organic crops. She conducts research aimed at the use of non-chemical methods, natural products and beneficial microorganisms and macroorganisms. Her research also includes elements of biodiversity and shaping the infrastructure of farmlands as an improvement of the method of biological protection. Author of many original and popular science works. He closely cooperates with agricultural advisory units and research units. Editor of the scientific publications of IPP-NRI and coordinator of numerous research projects financed from national and EU funds.

University of Teramo, Teramo, Italy

Clemencia Chaves Lopez is Associate Professor of Microbiology at the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Teramo and member of the teaching body of the PhD course in Food Science at the same University. She graduated in Biology at the Faculty of Science in Valle University- Colombia and is Ph. D. in Food Biotechnology of Bologna University. She frequently teaches in masters on Food Technology and Biotechnology. She participates in Research Programs involving Italian and foreign Universities and food industries. She carries out her researchers on Food Safety, in particular about the impact of new technologies on fungi survival and growth, as well as Microbial Ecology of Fermented foods and beverages.

University of Debrecen, Debrecen, Hungary

Prof. Dr. Erzsébet M. Karaffa is full professor in Plant Protection, at the University of Debrecen. She holds an MSc in Biology (microbiology) and in Plant Protection Management, and a PhD in microbiology all from University of Debrecen (Hungary). She habilitated in 2007, and working at the Institute of Food Science at the same University. She published several research articles on the field of mycology and plat pathology, and was a leader of national and international projects. She works on aetiology, epidemiology, and control of fungal diseases of grapevine, sour cherry and walnut.

On Tuesday, 23 November 2021, MDPI and the Journal Horticulturae organized the third webinar on Horticulturae, entitled "Use of Basic Substances and Potencial Basic Substances to Control Porato Pathogens and Postharvest Diseases of Papaya and Sour Cherries".

The introduction was held by the Chair of the webinar, Prof. Dr. Gianfranco Romanazzi from the Marche Polytechnic University. He coordinates several projects, including PRIMA StopMedWaste and Euphresco BasicS, and research activity focuses on alternatives to synthetic fungicides for pre and postharvest disease management.

The first speaker to quick off this webinar was Prof. Dr. Jolanta Kowalska. Jolanta Kowalska is the head of the Department of Organic Agriculture and Environmental Protection at the Institute of Plant Protection - National Research Institute in Poznań, Poland. She started the webinar's discussion with her talk on The Effect of Selected Basic Substances on Main Potato Pathogens.

The second presentation with the title "Antifungal Activity and Other Mechanisms of Action of Ruta graveolens Essential Oil" was held by Dr. Clemencia Chaves Lopez, an Associate Professor of Microbiology at the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Teramo and member of the teaching body of the PhD course in Food Science at the same University.

The third and last presentation, entitled "Pre-postharvest Application of Chitosan Against Postharvest Decay of Sour Cherry" was held by Prof. Dr. Erzsébet Mónika Karaffa a full professor in Plant Protection, at the University of Debrecen. Her research and development area is aetiology, epidemiology, and control of fungal diseases of grapevine, sour cherry and walnut.
